Mego Price Stickers: Service Merchandise?!

Thanks to Mego-head Scott (”megomuseum”) Adams, we have an incredible set of three identical price stickers, affixed to three different, 4th Wave Mego World’s Greatest Super-Heroes figures!

Scott tells me that, while he can’t confirm, he believes these were sold by Service Merchandise. Check out these three price stickers, affixed to MIB “2nd Version” Marvel (New Logo) heroes. Left to right, Human Torch, Invisible Girl, Thor:

Price Sticker

The stickers all read:

  • 03FO9
  • MEGO
  • 115605
  • 1313
  • $2.99

How freakin’ cool that the price stickers actually have “MEGO” printed on them?! More importantly, how weird that the stickers feature the “4-digit” Item Code, well after Mego introduced the “5-digit” Item Code? Wow.

Do you have any idea what retailer sold the toys pictured above? It was Service Merchandise, right? If you agree, or you think it was a different store, please explain why you think so. Post your comments below. I’d like to hear your thoughts.

Mego Price Stickers: Target!

It’s kinda the same as Wal-Mart, except Wal-Mart isn’t cool.

Target is cool.

Target is so hip and cool that some call it “Tar-zhay,” affecting an irritating French accent.

Based in Minneapolis, MN, Target is a retail giant. Originally a relatively small, regional chain, Target has grown to become one of the largest chains in the world; it is so large, in fact, the parent company (which also owns “Mervyn’s California”) recently changed its corporate name to “Target, Inc.”

And back in the day, Target sold Mego toys. Suh-weet.

Can you imagine walking into a Target TODAY and finding a freakin’ Mego figure?!

Back in 1976, some kid did just that, scoring a sweet MIB Human Torch. Sadly, it took a while to sell the figure, as evidenced by the “Clearance” price sticker affixed to this specimen:

Price Sticker

The original sticker reads:

TARGET
861 652
013
$2.99

The second (Clearance) sticker reads:

TARGET
861
013
CLEARANCE
.75

Pretty cool. At $2.99, I probably wouldn’t buy that MIB Mego Human Torch figure, either.

But for $0.75? I’ll take ‘em all.

Daily Mego Adoration: Poster Fun with 2nd Issue 1975 Marvel Cards!

Daily Mego Adoration Here’s our Daily Mego Adoration for Wednesday, April 2, 2008:

Poster Fun: 2nd Issue ©1975 Marvel Cards!

Here’s a new addition to my Poster Fun series. Today, we truly marvel (ahem!) at every Marvel character Mego issued on a 2nd Issue ©1975 card, in chronological order of release. Originally, I didn’t want to present this poster, because I cannot show the original, ©1975a card for each character.*

But Dan Crandall, whom we all can thank for most of the cards pictured below (thank you, Dan), suggested it would look cool anyway. So, this one’s for you, Dan. You were definitely right. There are 13 such cards. Enjoy!

*All cards below are ©1975a cards, except Spider-Man, Hulk and the Fantastic Four, which are the ©1975b cards.

Desktop Patterns: Mego Fantastic Four!

I really enjoyed photographing and designing the character “splash” pages that appear in World’s Greatest Toys! I sought to create the most iconic imagery possible for each, and I think they’re pretty keen.

I recently did something for myself, and thought I would share it with you guys. I created a Desktop Pattern (or “wallpaper”) for my computer screen, using one of my favorite splash pages: The Fantastic Four.

I created two different sizes, depending on your monitor settings: 1024×768 and 1280×1024. They look like this:

Desktop Pattern

If you want to try it out on your computer, you can download the appropriate size here:

I hope you dig it. I plan to create additional Desktop Patterns in the future, using other photos of Mego characters. Do you have a favorite image you’d like to see? A favorite character? Let me know in the comments below!

Daily Mego Adoration: Poster Fun with Loose Mego WGSH Figures!

Daily Mego Adoration Here’s our Daily Mego Adoration for Tuesday, March 25, 2008:

Poster Fun with Loose Mego WGSH Figures!

I wish I had been granted more pages in the Mego book, Mego 8″ Super-Heroes: World’s Greatest Toys!

At 256 pages, it’s already chock full of Mego goodness. But had it been longer, I would have included a whole bunch of other Mego goodness, such as large, composite photos of appropriate groupings of Mego figures and packages.

Sigh.

Since I didn’t have enough room to include such indulgences, I have decided to start a new Blog series to showcase my intended goodness, and I’m callin’ it Poster Fun!

Up first, a composite of every 8″ Mego World’s Greatest Super-Hero figure, in chronological order of release. Between 1972 and 1982, Mego issued 37 different Super-Heroes. Enjoy!
